This week in my Open Scholarship class, we read two fascinating articles: Planning to Share vs. Just Sharing by Scott Leslie and Open Pedagogy: The Importance of Getting It In the Air by David Wiley. Both articles highlighted the importance of sharing our knowledge with our community. These articles also pointed out many obstacles that those who want to share. Reflecting on the article shared by Leslie, I found disappointed how institutions spent so much time planning what to share, how to share, and to whom to share; as a result, they ended up not sharing as much as they could. As Leslie suggested, this strategy doesn’t work. I agree that if many people are involved in planning, it will most likely be challenging to reach an agreement. Most of us don’t have time to waste on discussions that seem not to get a destination. It is crucial to achieving a balance between planning and execution. But how to get to the point and start sharing? Some ideas that came to my mind:
Keep it simple instead of making everything so complicated
Promote the use of simple tools for sharing
Stop over-planning
Get it out even if it is not perfect
I realize that Institutions are slow to change, so pursuing our personal networking seems to be the way to accomplish our goal of sharing.
