Open Textbooks & DEI (Diversity, equity and inclusion)

It is critical to ensure that Open Textbooks do not perpetuate the same inequities that traditional textbooks have done. For example, it has been noted that textbooks lack diversity. Diversity of cultural backgrounds is an influential aspect of textbook content. A student's ability to learn and internalize material is enhanced when he or she sees himself or herself reflected in their books. Let me share an experience with you that shows why it is important to represent everyone in a textbook. As part of her social studies class, my daughter was required to choose a character that has made an important contribution to America. My daughter chose a Latina who has achieved much in history. As she explained, she wants to demonstrate to her classroom that Latinos have made significant contributions to America. This is even though they are not mentioned in the textbook or in the course materials. She felt that something was missing from the instruction she had received. It was a big deal for her, so she thought that was unfair only to learn one side of history.

Diversity is critical in order to provide students with a broader understanding of the world. One common problem found in textbooks is the lack of diverse images in textbooks. Also, some images can reinforce and perpetuate stereotypical ideas that negatively impact marginalized communities. Most of the people who create these books are unaware that they are doing this and are unaware of the importance of creating diverse textbooks. It has been determined by OpenStax that terminology, image selection, historical figures, and reference issues are the most frequently encountered problems. In order to guide content creators on avoiding common mistakes, improving books, and finding additional resources, they have developed a DEI framework. This framework can be used to guide any effort to make DEI part of our Open Textbooks.

As part of the process of improving OpenTextbooks, we should actively and intentionally incorporate DEI. One way to know what needs to be improved is to listen to the communities we collaborate with. In addition, we should use a continuous evaluation process to receive feedback from these communities to adjust things that the book creator may not be aware of. Knowing that I do not know how to create a more diverse and inclusive textbook is the first step, but it is not sufficient. Things changed as a result of an action. It is clear that classrooms are becoming more diverse every day, and this will not change in the future. The most effective way to create an environment in which everyone can succeed is to include all students. We should take action and make sure we include everyone.
